[THE INTERN INTERVIEW] Eloise’s Journey: Exploring the Intersection of Law & Psychology as a KASS Intern

Meet Eloise, a dedicated and passionate student currently pursuing a double degree in Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Psychological Sciences at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. Eloise’s academic journey is driven by a deep appreciation for the law’s role as a societal cornerstone and a fascination with the complexities of the human mind. Her interest in intellectual property law, combined with her psychological insights, has led her to KASS, where she is currently undertaking an internship to further explore the dynamic intersection of these two fields. Eloise is committed to expanding her legal knowledge, honing her research and analytical skills, and gaining practical experience that will shape her future career in law.

We asked Eloise to share some thoughts on her experience with us, and here’s what she had to say…

What degree are you pursuing, and why did you choose it?

I am currently pursuing a double degree in Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Psychological Sciences at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. I chose to study law because I have a profound appreciation for its role as a foundational tool in society. I perceive the law not merely as a set of rules to be followed but as a profound reflection of our society’s beliefs, values, and aspirations. It fascinates me how the law is dynamic and responsive, capable of evolving alongside our changing views and societal norms. For example, intellectual property law is a remarkable instrument to aid individuals’ creative and innovative endeavors, which I find incredibly inspiring and worthy of protection and celebration. As our understanding of justice, equity, and human rights evolves, so too does the law, adapting to meet the demands of a progressive society.

In addition to law, I decided to pursue psychology because of its profound ability to unravel the mysteries of human behavior and the intricacies of the human mind. Psychology enables me to comprehend not only my own experiences but also those of others—strangers, loved ones, and broader society. I believe that by understanding the human condition, we gain insights that can foster empathy, enhance relationships, and contribute to societal well-being. 😊

What motivated you to choose KASS for your internship?

What motivated me to choose KASS for my internship was my growing interest in intellectual property, which I developed during my studies back home. KASS stood out to me as reputable experts in IP law, and having previously visited four of the six countries where KASS has offices, I was intrigued by the opportunity to understand how legal systems operate in a range of different jurisdictions. I saw KASS as the ideal place to deepen my understanding and application of intellectual property law.

How has your experience with KASS been so far? What specific skills or experiences do you hope to gain?

My experience with KASS has been incredible so far! It has been a privilege to work alongside so many passionate and dedicated legal professionals who are excited by the law and its complexities. Coming into this internship, I was keen to explore the applicability of the law to real-life situations. I sought to strengthen my legal research and analysis skills, writing and drafting abilities, and further my professional development. Additionally, I was eager to compare Malaysia’s legal system with Australia’s, examining both the similarities and differences between the two.

I believe this experience has provided me with invaluable insights into the practice of law and has equipped me with practical knowledge that will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors in the field of law.

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of your academic and professional life?

Outside of my university studies and part-time job, I love spending time with my family and friends, especially exploring new restaurants and cafes! During long university breaks, I enjoy camping and traveling overseas. Recently, I did a camping road trip through New South Wales and visited Vietnam and Thailand. I also enjoy playing netball. I play in a social league and also represent my university in the UniSport Nationals competition. The UniSport Nationals competition is where universities from across the country compete against each other in different cities each year. Additionally, I have developed a liking for running and recently completed my first 10 km run back in Melbourne!

Do you have a favorite musician or band?

I would say I have a very diverse music taste, making it difficult for me to define one musician or singer as my favorite. However, I can confidently say that “California Dreamin'” by The Mamas & The Papas is my all-time favorite song, and I will never skip an ABBA song when it comes on!

Have you enjoyed any Netflix shows or movies recently?

Recently, I finished watching the Netflix special “Baby Reindeer.” The show portrays the true story of its producer, who also plays the main character. It tells his story of being stalked and harassed by a woman in his town, detailing the events leading up to and following the ordeal. As a student of Law and Psychology, I found the intersection between legal and psychological phenomena deeply fascinating. Although the show was unsettling and haunting at times, I found it to be a powerful depiction of reality. It challenges stereotypes of ‘ideal victims,’ highlights the lack of support for individuals with psychological disorders in the criminal justice system, and explores how the impact of abuse trauma can manifest differently than our expectations.
