How is KASS different from other law firms?
Traditionally, the practice of IP law in Malaysia was part of the legal practice of a general law firm. This practice was acceptable when all a firm had to do was to file trademark and patent applications from overseas patent and trademark right holders.
With the rapid industrialization of the country and the globalization of international trade, and with IP becoming a powerful tool of commerce in the recent millennium, we realized a need to establish a new corporation structured to meet the new demands of our local and foreign clients. Together with the increasing need for technical people to handle patent drafting, advise on patent infringement, conduct prior art search and so forth, there was a need to re-look at the manner of practice of this area of law.
And so, we took the bold and unconventional step of stepping out of the box and setting up a fully integrated, highly focused IP firm in 1999. While such firms are a common practice across US, Europe, Japan and Australia, this was certainly not the case in Malaysia. This cemented our position as one of the pioneer intellectual property firms in the country.
